Oncology is a specialized branch of medicine that deals with tumors. It’s scope includes diagnostic work, therapy, follow-up after treatment, palliative care and screening efforts of relatives and of whole populations. Tumors are diagnosed by direct tissue examination after a biopsy, using endoscopic, radiological imaging, nuclear imaging methods and by searching for specific markers in the blood. Therapy can be chemical, radiological or surgical and extensive patient support is usually needed.
