Description
An anemometer or wind meter is a device used for measuring wind speed and direction. It is a common weather station instrument that has changed little since its invention in the 15th century and is capable of standing up to hurricane-force winds, yet is sensitive to the lightest breeze. There are many types of anemometers, including cup, vane, hot-wire, sonic and others, each offering specific advantages and disadvantages. For example, sonic anemometers have no moving mechanical parts and are able to perform accurate three dimensional airflow measurements but may be disrupted by such debris as fallen leaves.
